Padel 101: Everything

Padel Rules

Learn How to Play Padel Like a Pro

The Basic Rules of Padel

Padel is one of the fastest-growing racket sports in the world — combining the strategy of tennis with the fun of squash. Played in doubles on an enclosed court about one-third the size of a tennis court, padel emphasizes teamwork, placement, and quick reactions more than sheer power.

The sport is governed by the International Padel Federation (FIP), which sets the official rules for court dimensions, scoring, equipment, and gameplay.

Here’s everything you need to know before you hit the court:

🏟️ Padel Court Layout

  • The court measures 32.81 feet wide x 65.62 feet long, surrounded by glass and metal mesh walls.
  • Net height: 34.65 inches at the center and 36.22 Inches at the posts.
  • The ball can bounce off the glass walls (after first hitting the ground), staying in play — a unique twist that makes padel dynamic and tactical.
  • A net divides the court in half, with service boxes similar to tennis.

🎾Equipment

  • Padel racket: Solid (no strings), perforateD face, made from composite materials.
  • Padel ball: Similar to a tennis ball but with slightly lower pressure (between 4.6–5.2 kg/cm²).
  • Footwear: Non-marking shoes designed for padel or clay surfaces to ensure proper traction.

🔢 Padel Scoring System

  •  Points go 15, 30, 40, game.
  • Deuce is played at 40–40; two consecutive points are needed to win the game.
  • Six games win a set (must win by two).
  • A tiebreak is played at 6–6 in a set, typically to 7 points (win by 2).
  • Matches are usually best of three sets.

🎾 Serving in Padel

  • The serve must be underhand, with the ball hit below waist height.
  • The server must bounce the ball once behind the service line before striking it diagonally into the opposite service box.
  • The ball must land in the opponent’s service box without touching the net or side walls first.
  • If the ball touches the net and lands correctly, it’s a let and the serve is replayed.
  • Each player gets two serves per point.

🧱 Ball in Play & Using the Walls

  • The ball must first bounce on the ground before hitting the glass walls.
  • Players can also hit the ball off their own walls (after the bounce) to return it, adding exciting angles and strategy.
  • After the serve, the ball must bounce once before hitting the back or side walls.
  • The ball can rebound off any wall on your side before crossing the net.
  • You may volley (hit before the bounce) except when returning serve.
  • The ball remains in play as long as it doesn’t bounce twice, hit the walls or fencing directly (before the bounce), or go outside the court limits.

🚫 Faults & Let Rules

  • A double fault on serve loses the point.
  • The ball bounces twice before being returned.
  • The ball hits the wall or fence before bouncing on the opponent’s court.
  • A player hits the ball into the net or outside the playable area.
  • The player touches the net or crosses into the opponent’s side.
  • Let serves (when the ball touches the net but lands correctly) are replayed.

🏸Player Positions

  • Padel is typically played in doubles (2 vs 2).
  • Players alternate serves every game.
  • Partners can position themselves anywhere on the court, but good communication and positioning are key to effective play.

🏆 Winning in Padel

The team that wins two out of three sets wins the match. In some shorter formats or tournaments, matches may be played as *best of one set*or with match tiebreaks to 10 points in lieu of a third set.

Success in padel comes from coordination, positioning, and control — not just power. Teams that communicate and use smart wall play often outperform those relying on strength alone.

Padel’s combination of power, precision, and strategy makes it one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. Understanding the official padel rules and regulations helps players improve their game, compete fairly, and enjoy the sport at every level.
